Making Partner. Equity Partner.
Those magic words don’t mean much to people outside the legal profession, but to you… these title changes are life changing.
Moving from Senior Associate to Partner is life changing - in a good way.
Feeling the foundations of your life move when you are told you are involuntarily leaving a Partnership is also life changing.

Want to get the golden call from your Managing Partner?
A man phoned me. He worked at a Magic Circle firm, and he knew and understood the process.
He was ambitious and knew he had a good chance but he didn't want to make a misstep.
He thought it was maybe a year early, but his mentor Partner wanted him to go for it. So did his wife!
After speaking with both of them, he called me, we discussed his situation and we spent some time working together in person. Lovely offices!
Then he had some homework to do, and we spent some more time on the phone reviewing his work.
Then the process started.
He sent me this jubilant message. Who says lawyers aren't human?
"After the vote on Saturday morning, I got a call from (the Managing Partner) on Saturday afternoon inviting me to join the partnership!
Which of course I accepted!
It was an incredible feeling, with a flood of relief and excitement. I tried to keep calm on the phone and then popped the champagne straight after!
My wife and I both discussed on Saturday after we had the news how pleased we are that I spent a day with you and how I needed it to feel in control of the process.
I met the partners who interviewed me for a drink yesterday and they said how strong my interview had been.
I also wanted to say that the training has helped me enormously in other areas of the job as well. I will be passing your name on to next year's candidates...."
Helping Associates/Senior Associates become Partners
Becoming partner makes all those years of long nights and weekends worthwhile for you and your family.
But being made up to Partner is not a promotion. It means you are seen as a worthy CO-OWNER of the business. Able to feed yourself and your team and contribute to the size and quality of the pie. That you can become a rainmaker and profit sharer.
And the profits and rewards can be handsome - especially in the Magic Circle or Silver Circle.
Competitive pressure on PEP means that fewer people are getting the chance to sit in front of a Partner Panel and not all those who do, make it. Will you? Will your business case stack up?
You’ve read all the good advice and you have developed a good business and personal case, you’ve got an active Partner mentor, sponsor or advocate.
Some Partners may even recognise you, you’ve been hitting your numbers and clients sometimes ask for you by name. Some people even say that you’re “a good lawyer”. But is it good enough? Are you good enough?
You know the process to become a Partner, and you know that in the Partner interview panel there will be standard interview questions, behavioural and competency questions, you’ll have to prepare a presentation and answer technical questions.
But are you truly prepared and guaranteed to present you at your best and tell the best stories about you?
You have spent some of the best years of your life working long nights and silly weekends. Finally, you have the chance to persuade Partners you are “good enough”.
I help people like you ensure you present your best personal and business case, prepare your answers and tell your best story and stories when under pressure.
Want to avoid the brutal call from your Managing Partner?
A man phoned me. He was a Partner at a Global Law firm.
He had been doing well and was super busy. Until he wasn't.
He got the matter of fact, brutal message. The one Partners don't ever want to get. The "Do you have time for a chat?" message that wasn't a request.
He is super smart, had done great work, and - crucially - hadn't done anything wrong, but had he acted as a Partner?
Apparently not. It was time to find a new home.
It doesn't really matter how much you have saved, a career interruption at this level can be life-changing - in a bad way. Family, friends, peers. Lots of emotions and people and "things" to juggle while discreetly being on the market.
The profession of law is all about reputation. How to find a new home fast, before everyone found out? I love working lawyers, but they do love to gossip. And gossip is lethal for reputations and careers.
We worked hard together, held our breath together and "enjoyed" several anxious months together.
I won't say anything more - NDA and extreme discretion is my default.
But I can say we are both delighted that he is now Partner at another very serious global firm and his life has returned to normal.
