How to improve your phone voice
During a face-to-face meeting, you are able to express yourself through body language and subtle features and gestures to portray yourself and your message. During a phone call, this is not possible, making conference calls and phone interviews difficult, but you can improve your phone voice.
Here are some ways to improve your phone voice:
- Overemphasis
During a phone call, it may be necessary to overemphasis certain points to show that you understand what the caller is saying. Saying “I understand” or “I see what you are saying” more than often will make you sound even more engaged.
- Use names
Another way to show that you are engaged in the conversation is to use the caller’s name. Do not overuse their name, but saying their name will make you sound like you are concentrating on what they are saying.
- Smile
Smiling during a phone call may seem redundant but it can make a difference. A natural smile (not a forced one) will subconsciously make your voice sound warmer and friendlier. Your caller will essentially hear your smile.
- Be a better listener
Get into the habit of being a better listener when on the phone. Wait a couple of seconds before answering a question to ensure that you do not accidentally cut the over person off. Also, try to restrain yourself and make your points or answers concise and straight to the put.
