The audience pulls out their mobile phones and films the events. With the press of a button, the recording is sent to over a hundred people instantaneously. Now tell me, which one seems more magical?
Today, everyone has the ability, through technological innovation, to complete acts of magic that would have seen you burn at Salem’s stakes. We can hear and see the voices of the dead through YouTube, feats of necromancy, we have all used precognitive psychic abilities through our weather apps, and turning on light switches pure pyromance. Modern technology, plain and simple is that of our is dark arts. It is the voodoo of legend. So if our technology is modern magic, are we the users the magicians? Truthfully no. The magicians and sorcerers sit in their high and mighty ivory towers in the mythical and elusive realm of Silicon Valley.
The truth of the matter is that every imprint you make on technology is somewhere stored, and never deleted. These grand wizards in their ivory towers have the knowledge and location of every single decision you have made with your metallic familiars. So that begs the question, is this too much power in their hands? Truthfully, we don’t know.
But what happens if we follow the events of nearly all mainstream media that deals with magical themes? There will be some instances where the arts are used for nefarious practices, and perhaps we are living in this very revelation of a moment. The grand magicians can decide through their platforms, and subsequently through their users (you, the audience), what is and what is not considered socially relevant.
This power extends into politics, pop culture, and everyday life.
